After recently announcing his forthcoming album ‘COMETA’, out on October 21st via ATO Records, Nick Hakim shares a new single and video from the project in ‘Vertigo’ and announces a European tour.

Directed by Asli Baykal and shot on location in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the video for ‘Vertigo’ sees Hakim in a rotating house built by Vojin Kusic, who created the unique space for his wife so she has the ability to change her view at the flip of a switch.

‘Vertigo’ was the first track recorded for ‘COMETA’, directly inspired by Stevie Wonder as Hakim layers synths on top of each other to depict the dizzying sensation of trying to stay focused on someone when it feels like the world around you is spinning. The new track closely follows the lead single ‘Happen’, which arrived last month alongside a Johan Carlsson-directed video shot in Sweden at Roy Andersson’s acclaimed Studio 24.

Speaking on the process of creating the visuals, Baykal says – “The making of the video spanned over a transformative year, and our collaborative friendship with Nick became the center of the journey. Initially, Nick showed me a video of a Tuxedomoon performance from Downtown 81. It was filmed in the studio where the camera was spinning in the middle.” He adds, “That idea gave life to the lyrics ‘ Spinnin’, fast as hell can’t tell if it’s me or the room that’s moving’. The room evolved into a moving house by a man who built it for his wife. Love is dizzying with multiple spins.”

Last month, Nick Hakim announced three ‘COMETA’ record release shows to take place in New York City, Los Angeles and London – all of which sold out immediately – to celebrate the album. Today, Nick Hakim announces his headline North American tour set for January and February 2023 ahead of his headline European tour to take place in March.

‘COMETA’ arrives following his critically acclaimed 2020 album ‘WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD’, which Rolling Stone described as a “brilliant collection that expands the horizons of the already dexterous approach to psychedelic soul.” The album features collaborations with DJ Dahi, Helado Negro and Arto Lindsay.

Recorded between studios and domestic spaces throughout Texas, North Carolina, California, and New York, ‘COMETA’ (which is the Spanish translation of “kite”) is a collection of romantic songs written through different lenses that are guided by Hakim’s experience of falling in love in a way that made him feel like he was floating. This out of body sensation is the theme that anchors the album as he uses the extreme distance between a kite and a comet as a metaphor for the depth of one’s love for someone else and being so humbled by it. “The key is to find that extremity of love for yourself,” he says. “It’s about growing into someone you want to be; it’s about finding pure love within yourself when the world around us seems to be crumbling.”

But for Hakim, the purpose of this project is less about constructing a narrative around romance and more about exploration through 10 complex compositions woven with aching metaphors. While there are special memories attached to each track, he prefers to leave them open to interpretation, offering the listener a comfortable space to develop their own connections to the music. “I think it’s nice to have love in your life and to have people that are sharing and wanting that,” Hakim explains. “It’s my interpretation of a really romantic way to express love in my own way.”
